33 Examples of the Cultures and Technologies of Wetlands in Japan

This booklet is aimed for facilitating greater dialogue on the relationship between wetlands and people that will lead to the conservation and restoration of wetlands, community revitalization, capacity development and international exchange in Asia and in the world. It was published in “Inventory of Cultures and Technologies of Wetlands” project (2008-2011), which was funded by the Japan Fund for Global Environment of the Environmental Restoration and Conservation Agency. Strategic action plan on integrated water resources management, biodiversity conservation and sustainable agriculture in the Southern Bug River basin

The Strategic Action Plan (SAP) was developed in the frame of the Wetlands International Black Sea Programme’s project «Towards integrating wetland biodiversity conservation with water and agricultural management in Ukraine. A pilot project in the Southern Bug River Basin». The draft SAP was discussed at 4 regional workshops and 15 roundtables in different settlements located in the Southern Bug River Basin during a public information and educational campaign in 2008—2010. The final version of the SAP was approved by participants of the Basin Conference on 14 May 2010. The Southern Bug Basin Council approved the SAP on 3 February 2011 and decided to use it in the drafting of regional and local programs.

Celebration of World Wetlands Day 2011 in Serang-Banten, Indonesia

This report describes the World Wetlands Day activities in Desa Sawah Luhur, Kec. Kasemen, Serang-Banten, Indonesia on 2nd of February 2011. World Wetlands Day 2011 comes exactly 40 years since the Convention on Wetlands was signed in 1971 in the city of Ramsar, Iran. This makes its celebration in every Ramsar member country a very special one. Indonesia, with its continued commitment to the protection and conservation of wetlands for the benefit of present and future generations, is no exception.

Tema Hari Lahan Basah tahun 2011 ini adalah “Forests for Water dan Wetlands”. Sarat makna dan pesan

yang terkandung dalam tema tersebut. Lahan basah, hutan dan air adalah tiga komponen sumberdaya

alam yang terangkum dalam satu kesatuan ekosistem utuh, sehingga pemanfaatan dan pengelolaannya

haruslah terpadu dan utuh pula. Hutan khususnya hutan lahan basah tentu tidaklah akan tumbuh baik bila

habitat lahan basahnya tercemar dan terdegradasi, begitu sebaliknya lahan basah menjadi terancam bila

tegakan hutan di atasnya rusak atau hilang.

Wetlands International Annual Plan and Budget 2011

This plan sets out Wetlands International’ s priorities for the coming year and translates the Strategic Intent into concrete activities and linked results we aim to achieve by the end of the year. The Strategic Intent has a ‘rolling’ character which means that it is reviewed and consequently updated every 5 years, refreshing the 10-year outlook in the middle of its lifespan. A strategy review is currently in progress while the plan for 2011 is being developed. The emergent thinking coming out of this review is, where possible, already incorporated in the annual plan.

Horizon scan of global conservation issues for 2011

This review describes outcomes of a 2010 horizon-scanning exercise building upon the first exercise conductedin 2009. The aim of both horizon scans was to identify emerging issues that could have substantial impacts on the conservation of biological diversity, and to do so sufficiently early to encourage policy-relevant, practical research onthose issues.

Chilika Newsletter Volume - V

The fifth volume of newsletter Chilika, jointly published by Wetlands International South Asia and Chilika Development Authority, provides an update of various activities being undertaken for its conservation and wise use.  The issue focuses on management planning , and has a lead article on the management planning framework for the wetland ecosystem. Also contained within this volume are summaries of the Fisheries Resource Management Plan and the advanced acoustic technology introduced by the Chilika Development Authority for monitoring of the Irrawady Dolphins.
