Wetlands for water and life

Duck Specialist Group

The Duck Specialist Group's Vision and Mission is to establish and maintain an international network of experts, in collaboration with international conservation organisations and conventions, which will promote the management, conservation and monitoring of duck species worldwide.

Mission statement

To promote, in collaboration with the Threatened Waterfowl Specialist Group (TWSG) , the management, conservation and monitoring of ducks through information exchange and provision of advice.

What is the Duck Specialist Group and how does it achieve its Mission?

The DSG is coordinated on a voluntary basis, by Richard Hearn (Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust). It works closely with the TWSG since this Specialist Group also carries out activities for ducks. The main focus of the DSG is on promoting sound conservation and management and high quality research for the world's ducks. The DSG works closely with other Wetlands International /IUCN-SSC specialist groups also, thus ensuring maximum coordination and use of existing knowledge and expertise.

To achieve its mission, the DSG aims to:
  • Provide an international network of experts on the world’s ducks

  • Stimulate and support information exchange between duck specialists

  • Coordinate the provision of information and advice to Wetlands International/IUCN-SSC and others in support of promoting the conservation, management and wise use of ducks and their habitats.

The Duck Specialist Group Bulletin

The DSG Bulletin publishes short articles on duck management, research and conservation. The Bulletin is published periodically and its primary aim is to improve information exchange between duck specialists across the globe. We publish short papers with original data, progress reports of conservation projects, news items and requests for information. If you wish to submit an article for publication, please contact us.
