Wetlands for water and life

Swan Specialist Group

The Swan SG was founded in 1970 by William Sladen and works as part of the 'Waterbird Network' jointly with IUCN - Species Survival Commission and BirdLife International.

The aim of the group is to reach a better understanding of all swan species (behaviour, ecology...) and best apply this knowledge to conservation practices.

Wetlands International in cooperation with the Swan Specialist Group, Leningrad Regional Department on Protected Areas, Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust and Dienst Landelijk Gebied organised a flyway population Action Plan workshop on the Bewick’s Swan in September 2009 . The workshop was held from 25-29 September in St. Petersburg, Russia and was organised within the framework of the BBI Matra project “The Long Journey. Demonstrating a practical approach to flyway conservation: a Russian-Dutch collaboration”. The action plan focuses on the NW European population of the Bewick’s Swan (Cygnus columbianus bewickii) which has shown quite a dramatic and significant decline for the last decade. The workshop gathered experts from the whole NW Europe flyway including wide representation from the breeding and moulting areas in Russia. For further information please contact Szabolcs Nagy.

Arctic Birds Breeding Conditions Survey:

ABBCS logoThe Arctic Birds Breeding Conditions Survey (ABBCS) is a joint venture of the International Wader Study Group and Wetlands International's Goose and Swan Specialist Groups.

The project aims to collate information on environmental conditions on the breeding grounds of Arctic nesting birds (in particular, waders and waterfowl) in a persistently updated database. Analyses of data on bird numbers and breeding performance during the Arctic summer in relation to climatic, predatory and other relevant factors can give insights into the ecological processes acting at wide scale, and also provide valuable information for the conservation of sites and species.
