On 31 May 2005 the Wetlands International Strategic Intent 2005-2014 was formally launched!


On the 31st of May 2005 the Wetlands International Strategic Intent 2005-2014 was formally launched in The Hague, The Netherlands, where invited guests, staff and friends gathered at the festive ceremony.

Among the guests were delegates from partner organisations, government institutions and ministries, Embassies, and the private sector. President Max Finlayson opened the ceremony with a word of welcome, expressing his appreciation of the ideas and views that Wetlands International has received from its networks during the development of the Strategic Intent. CEO Jane Madgwick highlighted some of Wetlands International’s outcomes for wetlands conservation and presented the organisation’s perspective for the next ten years. Three speakers had been invited to provide a response to the strategic document and to give their vision for the future. Paul Lem, director of Plan Nederland, spoke of a “thorough and visionary programme” and stressed the importance of cooperation between development and environmental organisations. Secretary General of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality Chris Kalden referred to the message from the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment that wetlands are deteriorating faster than any other ecosystem, and stated that “Wetlands International is the one international organisation that can help reverse this trend”. Gordana Beltram, Chair of the Standing Committee of the Ramsar Convention, commended Wetlands International on its “key role in as the NGO with the best informed scientific and technical views.” Under the guidance of master of ceremony Tunde Ojei the launch event was concluded by the cutting of a large cake and a toast from the audience to the successful implementation of the Strategy!
