Wetlands International award to Chinese minister

07-Dec-2004

On December 7, 2004 in Beijing, the first Wetlands International Global Recognition for Wetlands Conservation and Wise Use award was presented by CEO Jane Madgwick to Minister Zhou Shengxian, on behalf of the China State Forestry Administration (SFA).

The award recognises the achievements of SFA in wetlands conservation and wise use. China joined the International Convention on Wetlands in 1992. Together with 17 other ministries/agencies, SFA completed the National Wetlands Conservation Action Plan in 2002. In 2003 they completed their first wetlands resource investigation and recently the Wetlands Conservation Programme has been completed to outline the activities needed to implement the Action Plan. Guests attending the ceremony and dinner reception included the 17 other ministries/agencies, the Political Consultative Conference of China, the National People's Congress, several universities, counsellors from several embassies, UNDP, EU and Shell representatives in China. Not only SFA government officials, but also many other guests expressed their appreciation that SFA has been awarded this global recognition.
