Pablo Canevari, a long time supporter, employee and friend of Wetlands International died on 22nd March in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as a result of complications following a recent illness. Pablo was key to setting up our South American programme and had recently returned to Buenos Aires to lead the development of Wetlands International in the region after spending 3 years working for the Bonn Secretariat. His education and career reflected his passion for the protection of migratory birds and, as a researcher, teacher and project organiser, Pablo was largely responsible for establishing many of the wetlands and waterbird programmes throughout the Americas region. His name was synonymous with waterbird conservation and had earned the respect of his peers worldwide. Many of us knew Pablo on a personal level and this news comes as a great shock. We will remember him as a fun person to be with socially and professionally. His optimism was infectious. Our thoughts and those of all his friends from South America and many others who have sent messages to us, are with his wife, Maria Jose, and his 3 children Sofía, 21, Andrés, 17 and Valentina, 12, and the rest of his family.
