New York - At the Global Clinton Initiative in New York, Jane Madgwick, CEO of Wetlands International has presented our commitment to work with communities on saving worldwide two million acres of carbon dense peatswamps.
During the week of 20-22 September 2011, the Global Clinton Initiative has brought business Jane Madwick with Bill Clinton at the Global Clinton Initiativeleaders, politicians, leaders of non-governmental organisations together to discuss the world’s most pressing challenges. Wetlands International CEO Jane Madgwick was invited to attend this meeting.
The meeting provided a key opportunity to get attention for the global challenges we work on: poverty, climate change, biodiversity loss, water stress. Wetlands International commits to restoring and conserving more than one million hectares(2,5 million acres) of wetlands, reducing CO2 emissions by at least 100 megatons by 2015. To do so, we will establish a global portfolio of long-term Ecosystem Restoration Projects through which we will protect and rehabilitate especially peat swamp forests for their ecosystem, livelihood, biodiversity and the carbon values of the carbon dense peatsoils.
