The Symposium was opened by Shaoxing Party Secretary Wang Yongchang, Deputy Administrator of the State Forestry Administration of China, the Chief Planner of the Ministry of Construction of China, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment and Sanitation in Mali Abdoulaye Berthe, the Mayor of Shaoxing Municipal People’s Government Zhang Jinru and Wetlands International’s CEO Jane Madgwick.
Participants at the Symposium urged governments, development, health and conservation agencies involved in wetland management, to take action to improve the health of all people, in harmony with wetland conservation objectives; and committed themselves to the same aim.
Wetlands International initiated this symposium because of the urgency of the issue of health to poverty reduction and vice versa. Madgwick stated:
“We have learnt from our work in all regions that health issues should always be considered as a part of poverty reduction programmes and the establishment of a sustainable economy. Sustainable livelihoods are a pre-requisite for wise use of wetlands which in turn will result in improved food security, improved access to clean water and improved environmental security against floods and droughts. Therefore healthy wetlands are important for healthy people.”
Keynote speeches included ‘Wetlands, health and sustainable development – global challenges and opportunities’, by Dr Max Finlayson, outgoing President of Wetlands International and Principal Researcher of Wetland Ecology at the International Water Management Institute and ‘The allocation of water resources so as to maintain the ecological integrity and optimise the benefits of wetlands for people’ by Professor Wang Hao of the Ministry of Water Resources of the People’s Republic of China.
