With the designation of Hachirogata-Kantakuchi on the East Asian Anatidae Site Network the Network now covers 28 sites in 6 countries. The whole network was launched only in 1999.
Hachirogata-Kantakuchi in northern Japan is an extensive area of rice paddies (17,000 ha). The area provides an excellent habitat for migratory waterbirds, especially during the northern winter.
The site meets the criteria of international importance for migratory Anatidae by supporting internationally important numbers (more than one percent of the flyway population) of Taiga Bean Goose Anser fabalis middendorffii, Tundra Bean Goose Anser fabilis serrirostris and White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons.
The area has been designated as a Special Protection Area of the Japanese Ogatasugen National Wildlife Protection Area in Minamiyakita-gun, in Akita.
