Shocking speech of Museveni to Ramsar Convention

16-Nov-2005

The President named the threats for the protection of wetlands: frozen social structures, agriculture, siltation, but surprisingly also the international environmental NGO’s. After an earlier cancellation and a long delay, the President finally spoke to the Convention hosted by his country.

The President criticised NGO’s opposition to the construction of dams for hydropower. In fact, his criticism was misdirected. According to Wetlands International, the speech is very insulting for all the NGO’s which are working on wetland protection for the benefit of man and nature. This part of the speech was in complete contradiction to the evidence of effective government and NGO collaboration for wetlands conservation and strong community support in Uganda. The participants experienced this for themselves during Sundays’ field trip. Together with other NGO’s (Birdlife, IUCN, WWF) Wetlands International is attending the convention as an official International partner and is currently considering supporting a joint NGO - government project for peatlands conservation in Uganda.
