Wetlands International was saddened to learn of the passing on Tuesday 11 March 2003, of Jan Rooth. A pioneer of international wetland and waterbird conservation, he participated in the MAR Conference (1962) and was one of the Dutch experts involved in the development of the Wetlands Convention and participated in the Ramsar Conference (1971). For 25 years (1963-1988) he headed the Ornithological Department of the Dutch Institute for Nature Management and developed its important international position on waterbird research and conservation. His own interest was in geese (Greylag) and particularly Flamingo's. He was instrumental in protecting the Flamingo colonies in the Dutch Caribbean Islands. Jan was also for 16 years the Dutch National Delegate to IWRB and contributed significantly to the development of the organisation. He also served on the board of many Dutch ornithological and conservation organisations, including ICBP. Wetland and waterbird conservation has lost one of its most dedicated and colourful ambassadors.
