To determine the migratory routes of the globally threatened Black-faced Spoonbill Platalea minor, a species restricted to eastern Asia, 11 individuals were captured and fitted with green leg bands in Hong Kong in early December 2002. Green bands were placed on the right legs of the birds, with engraved white numbers A27 - A37 on. There are no color bands on the left legs (radio-transmitters were placed on the left legs). Please inform the Yamashina Institute and the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society if you see the birds in the field. E-mail addresses: Yamashina Institute (Mr. Ozaki) ozaki@yamashina.or.jp or Hong Kong Bird Watching Society (Mr. Yu) ytyu@hkstar.com Colour bands have also been placed on individuals in North Korea and Taiwan and these have already provided valuable information on the movements of these birds. Please report sightings of colour-banded Black-faced Spoonbill to us. This will help to find out about the migration and important sites for this species.
