In the year 2000, Shell Malaysia Berhad sponsored the development and production of the Tasek Bera Wetlands Activity Pack. Tasek Bera, Malaysia’s first and only Wetland of International Importance or Ramsar Site, is a freshwater swamp system in Pahang State. The Activity Pack was launched during a Youth Quake journalists’ camp held in Tasek Bera in October 2001. Assisted by local Semelai Nature Guides, 150 students and adults participating in wetland camps have used the Pack thus far. Now Shell has donated another RM 20,000 to enhance the Activity Pack. The Tasek Bera Wetlands Activity Pack has rapidly become very popular with students and teachers who use it as a reference for their studies and lectures, respectively. They have found the Pack to be a rich and invaluable educational resource that is enjoyable and easy to use. Readers are introduced to interesting facts about Tasek Bera. For instance, the threatened elephants occurs, sometimes demonstrating their destructive antics, or the fact that freshwater swamps are the rarest type of wetlands in Malaysia. In addition, the Semelai people employ numerous fascinating traditional methods fishing, including different traps tailor-made to capture particular types of fish! Continuing our record of accomplishment, Wetlands International-Malaysia Programme will use the new funds to enhance the existing Tasek Bera Wetland Activity Pack. Among the Pack's new features are fact sheets entitled 'Adaptations of Animals and Plants', ‘Five Secrets of Tasek Bera', ‘Ways You Can Help Conserve Wetlands' as well as Activity Sheets such as a 'Wetland Crossword Puzzle', 'Wetland Word Grid' and a 'Tour to a Semelai Village'. Ideal as a tool for learning science, the Pack will help students gain a deeper insight into nature. It introduces them to the local flora and fauna, and other wetland characteristics while stimulating their minds with wetland games, and demonstrates basic principles for protecting wetlands. Moreover, it offers an interesting insight into the culture and lifestyle of a true wetland people, the Semelai. Obviously, it is best to use the Tasek Bera Wetlands Activity Pack during an actual visit to Tasek Bera. Many students on school outings as well as other visitors have had their lives enriched by their explorations of the lake and surrounding jungle with the Semelai. They have learned about Semelai legends of the lake, their musical instruments and handicrafts, their traditional clothes made from tree-bark, and much more.
