An inception workshop at the end of October marked the official start of a wetland conservation project in southwest Siberia (Russia). The project’s main objective is to draft a management vision for two lakes, with the full participation of local communities. These lakes, (the Ramsar site) Lake Chany and Lake Kuludinskoye, are located between the cities of Novosibirsk and Omsk in forest steppe and steppe zones, respectively. The greater region including the two lakes, contains more than 10,000 different lakes and marshes, forming a vast wetland complex which is of vital importance to large populations of breeding and migrating waterbirds. In addition, an environmental profile of both lakes will be drafted. The main partners in the project are: the Institute for Water and Environmental Problems (IWEP; Novosibirsk), the Institute of Systematics and Animal Ecology (ISAE, Novosibirsk), the Institute for Inland Water Management and Waste Water Treatment (RIZA, the Netherlands) and VEDA Consultancy (the Netherlands). The 2.5 year project Conservation of wetlands and wetland species in southwest Siberia is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries. Both the Russian government and the sponsor regard this project as an important example project for the implementation of the National Wetland Strategy for the Russian Federation (1999).
