The Wetlands International West Africa office has just launched a new project with support from the British Embassy in Dakar. The focus is on community wetland initiatives, and we have chosen four separate case-studies for on-site support. At Ziguinchor, in the Casamance region, a special pirogue (canoe) with diesel engine will be built following a model developed in Thailand (ie 'south-south' technology exchange). This boat will be used by a women's cooperative for trading mainly natural resources within the Casamance wetlands. At Somone coastal lagoon, a community management plan will be developed and the area put forward as a site of community cultural heritage. At Gandon, near Saint-Louis, a system of local community management will also be developed, whilst at two small Niayes wetlands near Dakar, local communities and NGOs will protect these threatened sites from sand dune encroachment and development for building. Both sites are very important for growing vegetables and providing 'open space' in some densely populated suburbs of greater Dakar.
