Deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Brooks Childress, former Chair Flamingo Specialist Group

27-Jul-2011

Wetlands International is deeply saddened to report the loss of one of flamingo conservation's champions. Dr. Brooks Childress, former Chair of the IUCN/SSC Wetlands International Flamingo Specialist Group from November 2004 to July 2010, passed away in the early hours of 22 July 2011.

Following a successful 27-year business career in the USA, England, and Canada, Brooks and his wife, Sandy, moved to Kenya in 1991 where Brooks took up a new career in biodiversity conservation. He studied for a PhD in ornithology (cormorants) and then devoted much of his time to promoting study and conservation of flamingoes world wide.

His achievements as FSG Chair were notable – he produced an international action plan for the Lesser Flamingo, produced and implemented a new strategic plan for the FSG and improved the quality of the SG Bulletin Flamingo. Under his leadership and charm, the membership of the FSG increased from 37 to over 300 members. Brooks was very successful in raising funds for flamingo conservation and encouraging people to undertake research and conservation work.

He will be greatly missed by conservationists and researchers world over.
Brooks is survived by his much loved wife Sandy, two daughters and three grandchildren.
