The event was organised under the Timber for Aceh initiative which goal it is to help the Indonesian people rebuild their homes, lives, and livelihoods quickly and sustainably using forest products from responsibly-harvested sources.

This initiative is designed to address both human and ecological needs in the aftermath of the devastating tsunami that struck Southeast Asia in December 2004. The need was great: A joint report of the BRR and International Partners (December, 2005)
says that 80,000 - 110,000 new houses are needed in Aceh and 13,500 in Nias as approximately 500,000 people were
displaced from their homes. At the date of publication, roughly 190,000 people in Aceh and further 13,500 families in Nias
remained homeless. Some 67,500 people were still living in tents in Aceh.
