In Sri Lanka Green Coast partner IUCN, in collaboration with the Coast Conservation Department (CCD), held a workshop at the Management Development and Training Centre in the Southern Province in Wakwella, Galle.
The main objective of this workshop was to build the capacity of the field officers from the government and non-government sectors, who are involved with the rehabilitation of the coastal belt. Issues pertaining to the conservation and management of post tsunami redevelopments projects were discussed by the authorities, with emphasis being placed on the how best to restore the coastal belt. During these sessions, policy and legal frameworks governing coastal zone management were also discussed.
Further to this field visits were organized to locations where ecosystem restoration activities were being implemented under the small grants component to the Green Coast project. This workshop addressed many of the highly debated issues regarding the coastal belt, and contributed towards enhancing the capacity of the field officers to implement sustainable rehabilitation projects along the devastated coastal belt of Sri Lanka.
