At a workshop held by the Green Coast project partners in Bangkok 14th-19th February, participants active in recovery activities in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka are revealing evidence that many tsunami relief efforts have overlooked the importance of healthy coastal ecosystems for people’s livelihoods. As a consequence, some coastal defense schemes are resulting in declining environmental conditions and reduced access by local people to valuable natural resources and benefits such as fisheries and tourism.
