UNFCCC Conference in Nairobi (Dec. 2006)

At the UN Conference on Climate Change (UNFCCC)  in Nairobi, Kenya in December 2006, Wetlands International presented the outcomes of its study PEAT-CO2 which was jointly developed with WL/Delft Hydraulics and Alterra.

Action Description:

Peat: 8% of global CO2 emissions

The study showed that the carbon dioxide emissions from degraded tropical peat swamp forests in Southeast Asia are equal to 8% of all global fossil fuel emissions.

Cause: deforestation & drainage

These huge amounts of carbon are released to the atmosphere when peatlands are deforested and/or drained, exposed to direct sunlight or - in the worst case - burnt. The report also sought attention for the role of expansion of palm oil plantations in these peatlands.
