Wetlands International is a leading global non-profit organisation dedicated solely to the crucial work of wetland conservation and sustainable management. Well-established networks of experts and close partnerships with key organisations provide Wetlands International with the essential tools for catalysing conservation activities worldwide. Our activities are based on sound science and have been carried out in over 120 countries.

Mission: To sustain and restore wetlands, their resources and biodiversity for future generations through research, information exchange and conservation activities, worldwide.

The Convention on Wetlands, signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971, is an intergovernmental treaty which provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.

The Convention's mission is the conservation and wise use of wetlands by national action and international cooperation as a means to achieving sustainable development throughout the world" (Ramsar COP6, 1996).

The National Centre for Tropical Wetland Research (NCTWR) based in Darwin in northern Australia, is an initiative annouced by the Australian Government to develop collaborative research and training programs related to tropical wetlands.

The mission of the National Centre for Tropical Wetland Research is to promote the wise use of tropical wetlands. This is achieved through comprehensive research and training programs and effective communication with all stakeholders.

Ministry of the Environment, Japan has played an instrumental role in providing financial support for the AWI since its inception in the year 1999.

The ASEAN Regional Centre for Biodiversity Conservation (ARCBC) serves as the central focus for networking and institutional linkage among ASEAN Member Countries (AMCs) and between ASEAN and European Union (EU) partner organizations to enhance the capacity of ASEAN in promoting biodiversity conservation.

ARCBC is linked to a National Biodiversity Reference Unit (NBRU) established within an existing institution in each ASEAN member country. The NBRU interfaces the ARCBC with the national authorities and institutions, provides local instruments for in-country follow-up of project activities and constitutes a first reference for screening of research proposals for formal endorsement to ARCBC.


The mission of the Center for Global Environmental Research (CGER) is to promote scientific understanding of the consequences of human activities on the earth system and to propose countermeasures to these consequences.
