Submission to SBSTA on REDD and peatlands - Sept 2011

This policy submission to the UN Climate Conference (UNFCCC) provides input to methodological guidance to the policy mechanism REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation). Wetlands International specifically focuses on the issue of peatlands in relation to REDD in this submission, which differ in relevant aspects from forests on mineral soil.

Analysis of information sources on waterbird migration in the Azov–Black Sea region of Ukraine:

The Azov–Black Sea area of Ukraine is annually used by millions of waterbirds as a stopover during their spring and autumn migrations. The first step towards development of a migratory waterbird monitoring
system is an overview of existing information, which includes three main blocks – scientific publications, results of waterbird counts during migration seasons and recoveries of ringed birds. The results of this
analysis are presented in this book.

Methodical Recommendations on Integrated Water Resource Management, Wetland Biodiversity Conservation, Econet Development and Organic Agriculture

The book includes methodical recommendations on basin approach to integrated water resource management, establishment of protected areas, econet development and sustainable agriculture as well as recommendations how to fill a Ramsar Information Sheet. The book is targeted to national, regional, basin and local level authorities in the water, agriculture and environment sector as well as to environmental NGOs and farmers.

Strategic action plan on integrated water resources management, biodiversity conservation and sustainable agriculture in the Southern Bug River basin

The Strategic Action Plan (SAP) was developed in the frame of the Wetlands International Black Sea Programme’s project «Towards integrating wetland biodiversity conservation with water and agricultural management in Ukraine. A pilot project in the Southern Bug River Basin». The draft SAP was discussed at 4 regional workshops and 15 roundtables in different settlements located in the Southern Bug River Basin during a public information and educational campaign in 2008—2010. The final version of the SAP was approved by participants of the Basin Conference on 14 May 2010. The Southern Bug Basin Council approved the SAP on 3 February 2011 and decided to use it in the drafting of regional and local programs.

Working together on disasters, climate, ecosystems

During the coming 5 years, Wetlands International will work closely with Red Cross, Cordaid, Red Cross Climate Centre and CARE to implement a range of projects in Asia, Latin America and Africa to increase people's resilience against (climate related) disasters via ecosystem restoration and management. Together they have formed the “Partners for Resilience” (PfR).

Jaltantra - Floodplains for livelihoods and biodiversity in North Bihar

This video tells the story how biodiversity, livelihoods and wetland management are interlinked in the North Bihar, India. Endikements, roads and other development do not take water management into account and damage this fragile balance. Wetlands International and Cordaid call for integrated management of water, wetlands to sustain and restore the ecological balance, benefitting people's livelihoods and protect them from floods.

Tana Delta, Kenya - Competition for Land and Water

The Tana Delta is the largest and wetland ecosystem in Kenya and is found on the Kenyan Coast (East). The Tana river is the largest and longest river in Kenya ( nearly 1,014 km long ). The Delta is about 130,000ha and suppors 100,000 people, consisting mostly of farmers, pastoralist & fishermen. However, the river volume has fallen by 20% in 10 years.
