WPWC Newsletter No. 14 - December 2010

The main purpose of this newsletter is to keep coordinators of national waterbird monitoring schemes in Europe, North Africa, Southwest and Central Asia up-to-date with developments in the International Waterbird Census (IWC). It is also intended for counters and all others interested in IWC. For those who are behind with data submission, we wish to kindly request that you send waterbird count data up to and including January 2010. 

The Global Peatland CO2 Picture

The report presents the first overview ever of peatland carbon data for all countries and regions of the world.  For every country/area information is given on extent and status of peatlands, volume of the peat resource and on CO2 emissions from different types of land use, both for the year 1990 as well as for the year 2008.

Annual Review 2009

The review charts the main achievements, as well as projects, finance and publications of Wetlands International during 2009. Furthermore, it highlights our work in relation to the Copenhagen Climate summit and a personal story from one of our projects. New this year is also our Climate Neutrality Report, as promised in last year’s Annual Review.

The Flyway Training Kit

The new Flyway Training Kit is a one-of-a-kind resource in flyway-scale conservation and represents an important step towards meeting core strategic objectives of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands and AEWA. This innovative conservation tool by Wetlands International and partners is designed to build capacity to plan, implement, monitor and engage in effective flyway-scale conservation of migratory waterbirds and wetland habitats in Africa and Eurasia.

Wetlands and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

This book presents a baseline of information that helps understanding of how WASH and wetland service provision are connected, why these linkages are vital and how they can be better managed. Furthermore, the publication presents a set of principles to be taken on by sector professionals as a way forward to improve integration in the future. The publication is the result of an ongoing collaboration between individuals and organisations from the wetland conservation sector and the water supply, sanitation and hygiene sector.

A Quick Scan of Peatlands in Central and Eastern Europe

A Quick Scan of Peatlands in Central and Eastern Europe reviews the status, con
servation and use of peatlands in the countries participating in the BBI-Matra Programme (Belarus, Russian Federation, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia and Turkey). Geographically, it covers central and eastern Europe together with the non-European part of the Russian Federation.

The ‘Bog’ (God) River Basin

The book gives a comprehensive description of the Southern Bug River Basin. It contains information about origin of the river name “Bog” and its natural conditions, short description of the river itself and its tributaries, information about geology, climate, landscapes, animals and plants, stories about history and modern economic development, short description of main settlements, environmental problems and ways to solve them. The book informs about nature protection areas and activities of environmental NGOs. It also includes children’s drawings and essays.
 

Vision of a new Ramsar regional initiative for Black Sea coastal wetlands (BlackSeaWet vision)

This publication is a background document for a new regional Ramsar initiative, which includes a brief overview of current status of coastal wetlands and main threats to them, legal framework and conservation activities related to coast and coastal wetlands, present mission, vision, key targets and objectives of BlackSeaWet Initiative.

Portfolio of Actions for Conservation and Sustainable Use of Black Sea Coastal Wetlands

The publication is made within the framework of the Wetlands International project "Establishing the foundations for the launch of a Black Sea Regional Initiative for the wise use of coastal wetlands (BlackSeaWet)". The Portfolio of Actions was prepared by national teams involved in the project. Present actions needed for coastal wetlands conservation and sustainable use are represented in a format understood by donors. It is supposed that the Portfolio will be used to achieve objectives of the new Ramsar regional initiative (BlackSeaWet).
