Pérdida de turberas alimenta el cambio climático

Las emisiones globales producto de la pérdida de suelos orgánicos de turba suman más de 3000 millones de toneladas de dióxido de carbono (Tm/CO2) por año; esto representa cerca del 10% de todas las emisiones antropogénicas globales.

Estas emisiones por pérdida de turberas actualmente no se contabilizan bajo el Protocolo de Kyoto, solamente se reportan1. La prevención de emisiones de suelos de turba drenados o degradados para los no-Anexo 1 no es
elegible bajo el MDL. El Plan de Acción de Bali permite prestar atención a las grandes emisiones de los suelos.
