Continent / Country / Region:
Global
We collect and analyse monitoring data on millions of waterbirds from around 2000 volunteers globally. Concrete results of all this work are the tri-annual Waterbird Population Estimates, of which the fourth edition was the latest. This work is being carried out in many countries throughout the world, with input from all our offices and strong support from our network of experts in the specialist groups.
Action Description:
In more than 100 countries, millions of waterbirds are counted each year. We bring all this information together and use it provide information on the global state of the birds and analyse changes in their populations.
History of the census
In 1967, the International Waterfowl Research Bureau (Wetlands International’s predecessor) established the International Waterbird Census (IWC) in Europe and some countries in Asia and Africa. In 1987, the Asian Waterbird Census was established and in the early 1990s this was followed by the African Waterbird Census and the Neotropical Waterbird Census (South America).
