Simultaneous planting of mangroves was carried out at four coastal sites, to mark the significant event. The Penang Inshore Fishermen’s Welfare Association (PIFWA) nursery and the Forestry Department provided the required seedlings. Various government departments (Forestry Department, Drainage and Irrigation Department, Land Office), school children and local community representatives were present, just as well as journalists from Malaysian media (see downloads in right column).
At each site around fifty participants joined the events. The mangrove trees were planted in Kuala Kurau in Perak, Seberang Prai in Penang and Taman Nilam and Kuala Tunjang in Kedah. This was made possible through the excellent logistic and local support from Friends of the Earth (Sahabat Alam) Malaysia. During the event the initiating NGOs called upon the government to gazette all sea mangrove areas as forest reserves, in order to stop their rapid decline.
Under the Small Grants Facility (SGF) of Green Coast a number of activities have been undertaken in a short period of time, including establishment of nurseries and planting of mangrove seedlings. Important aim is – in the current phase of this community-based project - to replicate and share PIFWA’s experience in community mangrove planting with other local fishermen groups in three other sites. The project has created a motivation among the local community groups to participate in mangrove planting. Furthermore, it stimulates local government authorities towards involving other stakeholders.
