Management of Lake Kutubu Ramsar Site, Papua New Guinea

The project aims to assess current condition of populations of freshwater fishes (especially the endemic species) at Lake Kutubu, Southern Highlands, Papua New Guinea, comparing species composition, sizes and abundances to baseline data from around the date of Ramsar-listing. It involves a rapid assessment of ecological health of the wetland and includes consultations with traditional land and resource owners.

Support to NRM (natural resource management) regional bodies and wetland managers across Australia in recognition and management of important wetlands.

This three year project will support priority, remote NRM regions across Australia in terms of their important wetland (Ramsar, Directory and shorebird site) assets. Working closely with the regional bodies, WIO will transfer skills on recognition and management of these assets through one-to-one, on-site consultation at regional centres and important wetland sites.

Tidal Flat Survey at Locals' Participation

For surveys of tidal flats, it is essential to carry on a long-term and frequent surveys to capture the regular changes and diversity of these habitats. However, the wide diversity of tidal flats has prevented many non-specialists from participating in the survey. This project by WI-Japan proposes to establish a survey method through citizen-based participation, and has involved preparation of an illustrated survey guidebook on tidal flat benthos, and hosting of public workshops and organisation of both orientation and as trial surveys. It is our third year, where we conduct three workshops in eastern Japan.

New FluBird Project (NFB)

Wetlands International is the co-coordinator  to this project with Erasmus University and 10 other partners throughout Europe. The NFB project aims at setting a Network for Early Warning of Influenza viruses in migratory birds in Europe. Our role is to provide data and expertise on high risk bird species, coordinate surveillance in high risk sites and build capacity for monitoring waterbirds.

Central Asian Flyway interim coordination

Wetlands International has been the driving force behind the development of the 'Central Asian Flyway initiative', carried out in cooperation with 30 states in Central Asia. The initiative is pushing for better protection of migratory waterbirds and the wetlands they depend on. Now after some years we achieved improved inter-governmental cooperation on the protection of waterbirds and their key habitats.
