Poverty reduction in the Inner Niger Delta, Mali

This project is a demonstration project of the Wetlands and Poverty Reduction Project that aims to contribute to poverty reduction and biodiversity conservation by putting in place a participatory and sustainable management process for local development in the Inner Niger Delta.

Support for the local dialogue on water, food and the environment in Mali

This project is setting up a dialogue on water, food and the environment in Mali with the aim of establishing or revitalising local fishery councils to provide better management of fish stocks and wetlands.

Dams in Mali

This project aims to address the environmental, social and economic consequences of expanding the dam capacity in the Upper Niger River Basin. It will update the existing impact assessment developed under a previous project with new information.

This project is being carried out through our Headquarters and Mali office, in partnership with Altenburg & Wybenga, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam – Institute for Environmental Studies.

Integrated water resources management in the Upper Niger Basin

This project supports consultations with stakeholders in Mali and Guinea concerning future directions for promoting integrated water resources management.

African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) support, Mali

This project supports conservation of flyways in Mali.

International Waterbird Census

We collect and analyse monitoring data on millions of waterbirds from around 2000 volunteers globally. Concrete results of all this work are the tri-annual Waterbird Population Estimates, of which the fourth edition was the latest. This work is being carried out in many countries throughout the world, with input from all our offices and strong support from our network of experts in the specialist groups.

Mali, Inner Niger Delta

Wetlands International investigated the availability and need for water in the inland 'Inner Niger Delta' in Mali and upstream. This resulted in an advice for a more optimal use of the precious water in this dry area and on the use of the current and proposed dams upstream for hydropower and irrigation.

Wetlands and Poverty Reduction

This programme aimed to improve policies so that they include the role of wetlands for poverty reduction; especially in developing countries. We trained people, supported demonstration field work in developing countries, provide seed funds for proposals and partnerships, created new partnerships with NGOs working on policy change and in the development sector, and advocated our message among decision makers, NGOs and foundations at national and international levels.
