Field guide on mangroves of Indonesia

This project aims to reproduce a guide to the identification of mangroves and associated beach species of Indonesia. The guide covers over 250 species, and includes chapters on the status and ecology of mangroves and associated species, identification tables, line drawings, detailed species descriptions and notes on distribution.

This project aims to reduce poverty and vulnerability, and increase sustainability, by encouraging and enabling community groups and others to understand and replicate a mangrove-aquaculture ecosystem in Aceh.

This project runs training courses at several locations throughout Indonesia aimed at enabling NGOs to implement wetland programmes.

Climate change, forest and peatlands in Indonesia

This project supports management of two core peatland areas in Indonesia, and builds national capacity to participate in evolving climate change mitigation initiatives, such as carbon storage and sequestration.

International Waterbird Census

We collect and analyse monitoring data on millions of waterbirds from around 2000 volunteers globally. Concrete results of all this work are the tri-annual Waterbird Population Estimates, of which the fourth edition was the latest. This work is being carried out in many countries throughout the world, with input from all our offices and strong support from our network of experts in the specialist groups.

Peat, biodiversity and climate change

This project assesses the capacity of Peatlands to store carbon. It also provides recommendations on how Peatlands could be managed to ensure their capacity to store carbon is maintained and even improved while, at the same time, conserving and restoring biodiversity values.

Storing carbon is crucial for preventing carbon dioxide emissions and therefore preventing further climate change. If the carbon of the world's peatlands is released, the level of carbon in the atmosphere will rise with 75%.


This project is being implemented in China, Indonesia and the Russian Federation, together with our offices in those countries.

Wetlands and Poverty Reduction

This programme aimed to improve policies so that they include the role of wetlands for poverty reduction; especially in developing countries. We trained people, supported demonstration field work in developing countries, provide seed funds for proposals and partnerships, created new partnerships with NGOs working on policy change and in the development sector, and advocated our message among decision makers, NGOs and foundations at national and international levels.
