Wetland and Biodiversity Enhancement for the Ras Al Khor Wetlands in Dubai

The project involved providing consultancy services on a low impact development project that would have minimal disturbance on the wildlife and environment, as well as enhancing eco-tourism activities, biodiversity enhancement opportunities of this important wetland site.


Action Description:

Ras Al Khor in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is a wetland reserve renowned for attracting migratory birds in large numbers. The wetlands have large numbers of birds, crustaceans, small mammals, and fish. It is a sanctuary, an enclave of relative wilderness amidst swirling traffic and sprawling urban infrastructure. Located just as the name in Arabic suggests - at the Cape of the Creek, it is among the few urban protected areas of the world.

The scope fo the work on our Malaysia office includes to:

  • Carry out a site feasibility study at the Site for “ground truthing”.
  • Review all documents and maps available for the Site.
  • Review the preliminary conceptual master plan prepared by the Consultant and provide input on a low-impact development based on the site survey and other documents reviewed for the Site.
  • Highlight any environmental issues that shall be of importance pertaining to the Site and the Project, considering its international importance.
  • Undertake brainstorming and consultative sessions with consultants, specialist consultants and other technical personnel for the proposed Project presentation.
  • Provide and submit recommendations on possible ways to enhance biodiversity at the Site (includes providing a list of fauna and flora).
  • Submit recommendations on potential eco-tourism activities that can be designed and promoted at the Site. 
  • Provide recommendations on buffer vegetation to screen out human activities 
  • Prepare and provide development and construction guidelines to minimize development disturbance to wildlife and environment.
