Impact Assessment for the coasts of Thailand

The Coastal Habitats and Resources Management (CHARM) project was a five year collaboration between the European Union (EU) and the Royal Thai Government (RTG), implemented through the Department of Fisheries (DoF) and CHARM's own staff. CHARM aimed to produce a coastal resource management framework through the promotion of co-management between the RTG at all levels and the private sector, non-government organizations and local communities.

Action Description:

CHARM's original geographic coverage was five provinces in upper southern Thailand; Surat Thani, Phuket, Phang-Nga, Krabi and Trang. Due to the devastation of the December 2004 tsunami on the west coast of Thailand, a sixth province Ranong, was added as CHARM extended its coverage to help the affected communities of this province.

The study was carried out during April-November 2007 by Wetlands International-Thailand Office. Full report can be obtained from Ms. Benchawan Teerakul at benchawan-t@psu.ac.th or Ms. Rusnee Uma at rusneeuma@yahoo.com
