Demonstration of practical poverty reduction and livelihood development through rehabilitation of coastal mangrove ecosystems

The goal of the project is to have by the end of 2010 Wetlands livelihoods-environment issues in Pemalang and Banten bay (Indonesia) recognized in policy and translated into practice through enhanced inter-sectoral planning and effective and sustainable resources on the ground.

This project focusses on the mainstreaming of sustainable wetland management principles and practice into the development of poverty reduction strategies through local and international partnerships in DAC1 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. It will do this by enhancing of existing and supporting development of new policies at local, national and international levels, with specific inclusion of the water and health sectors and by ensuring due attention to the need for equitable development.

Wetlands and poverty reduction in Berbak-Sembilang, Sumatra Indonesia

This demonstration project, in a Sumatran national park, provides local people with sustainable livelihoods through improved wetland management. The area is a vulnerable area of tropical peatland forests and threatened by logging and unsustainable agriculture.

This project aims to produce a database of environmental information on the tsunami-affected areas in North Sumatra and Nias (e.g. ecosystem types and threats, biodiversity, protected areas, land use) and to disseminate this information to several agencies.

Field guide on mangroves of Indonesia

This project aims to reproduce a guide to the identification of mangroves and associated beach species of Indonesia. The guide covers over 250 species, and includes chapters on the status and ecology of mangroves and associated species, identification tables, line drawings, detailed species descriptions and notes on distribution.

This project aims to reduce poverty and vulnerability, and increase sustainability, by encouraging and enabling community groups and others to understand and replicate a mangrove-aquaculture ecosystem in Aceh.
