Published article: Current and future CO2 emissions from drained peatlands in Southeast Asia

This is the first peer reviewed scientific article on the global carbon dioxide emissions due to peatsoil degradation and loss, with a focus on Southeast Asia. The article is based on the work for the report Peat-CO2 that presents the shocking figures about emissions due to drainage and fires in Southeast Asia.

Information sheet on palm oil & peatlands

This paper shines light on the issue of greenhouse gas emissions due to conversion of areas with peatsoils for palm oil production, including for biodiesel. The paper will focus on palm oil in Southeast Asia; the most relevant area for vegetable oil production on peatlands, with alarming greenhouse gas emissions as a result.

Poster - Peatland loss fuels climate change

The title of this poster is "Peatland loss fuels climate change". It is a cartoon showing the conversion of peatlands into palm oil plantation, which causes the relases of CO2 through burning practices as well as oxidation of the peat soil from the deforestation and drainage. The palm oil company employee has his pockets filled with dollars, stating "We plant oil palm to save the climate, and get REDD and biofuels subsidies".

The Global Peatland Fund flyer

This the flyer of the Global Peatland Fund, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by rehabilitating degraded peatlands – especially peatswamp rainforests in Southeast Asia. Peatland rehabilitation and conservation are extremely cost effective carbon mitigation options (US$7 to US$17 per tonne of CO2).

Factsheet: Palm oil and tropical peatlands

Palm oil is a driving force behind the destruction of tropical peatlands by deforestation, soil degradation and fires. Decomposition of the degraded organic soils which cover 0.2% of the global land surface leads to 8% of the global CO2 emissions.

Burning Issue: South East Asian Peatlands

Peatlands are particularly notable for their capacity to accumulate carbon in long term stores, ameliorating the release of greenhouse gases that affect climate change. They can store 15 times more terrestrial carbon than any forest type (about 550 giga tonnes). One third of this is stored in the Tropics. Globally the amount stored in peatlands is equivalent to 75% of all atmospheric carbon and around 100 years of emissions from fossil fuels.

This vital resource is now in great danger. Wildfires, drainage and deforestation are resulting in peatland destruction, contributing massively to atmospheric carbon. Annual carbon emissions in SE Asia over the last 15 years have reached 0.8 – 1.3 giga tonnes, or 13-26% of global fossil fuel emissions. In Indonesia in 1997, 20% of its peatlands were burnt.
