Wetlands International participates at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to get the gigantic Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions from degradation and loss of peatslands included in a new climate treaty.
Reducing emissions from forests (REDD)
Next this follow-up of the Kyoto Protocol, a mechanism is in development to provide incentives to Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD). Wetlands International advocates at the UNFCCC to include carbon stored in peat soils in this mechanism. If included, countries with peatlands are financially stimulated to restore and preserve their peatlands.
Key input to negotiations
From years of experience in field work as well as scientific research, Wetlands International provides country delegations at the negotiations with high-level data on peatland emissions. Furthermore, our policy submissions address key issues in the formulation of the climate treaty. Moreover, we also work through the Ecosystems Climate Alliance (ECA), an alliance of environment and social NGOs committed to keeping natural terrestrial ecosystems intact and their carbon out of the atmosphere.
Conferences & meetings
The participating countries will decide upon this follow-up of the Kyoto Protocol at the 15th Conference of Parties in Copenhagen, Denmark from 7-18 December 2009. Preparatory negotiations in 2009 take place in Bonn, Bangkok and Barcelona running up to the Copenhagen Summit.
