Charlie Avis joins Wetlands International as Senior Technical Officer (Wetlands) after 10 years working for the United Nations Environment Programme in Nairobi, Kenya and in Geneva, Switzerland. Before that, he had various positions across 12 years with WWF International, in the Danube river basin, across Europe and north Africa, and in the South Pacific.

Trained as a wetlands scientist at UCL and with a M.Sc.Agr in Rural Development from UCD, Charlie has worked on wetlands in Africa, Europe, Southeast Asia and the Pacific, and has experience in the private and academic sectors, as well as NGOs and the UN. He is especially interested in the links between business and conservation.

Born on an island off the south coast of England, Charlie is married with two children and as well as the environment and his family, is passionate about football, food, and travel. He speaks English, and passable French, German and Hungarian.
