“I have huge admiration for the people of Wetlands International who have been the consistent voice of this precious but undervalued giant among ecosystems and of the communities depending on them. Next to their unrivaled water, carbon and natural values, I believe that wetlands with their ever-changing dynamics can teach us humans how to embrace change. I am excited to offer my skills, network and passion to help the organization scale up its clout in response to the global challenges of our time.”
Jan Ernst de Groot has held executive positions in international business and supervisory roles at nature and civil society organizations. He currently is the chief legal officer at food retailer Ahold Delhaize. He served before as chair of the supervisory council of Wetlands International from 2011 to 2015.
Jan Ernst was born and raised in the river delta called the Netherlands. He currently lives with his family in a 17th century windmill used in the past to keep dry feet on a former island in the middle of brackish lakes. Nowadays the water levels in the area have been raised again to preserve the soggy peat meadows as a nature reserve including low-intensity farming and fishing.
