Hello, I’m Laura MacKenzie, and I’m delighted to join Wetlands International as a senior advocacy officer in the Advo-Comms team. My initial priorities include the new post-2020 global biodiversity framework, Ramsar, and strategic advocacy and influencing.
Previously, I spent seven years working in the UK Parliament, as a senior adviser and speechwriter to the UK’s only Green MP, where I led on climate, nature, and economic issues. I’ve worked in several advocacy and campaigning roles across the environmental NGO sector, including at the RSPB, National Trust, and Green Alliance, and as head of policy and public affairs at the Soil Association.
I moved from London to the Netherlands in March 2020. I’m from the Isle of Arran in Scotland where there are upland bogs plenty! I enjoy cycling, hill walking, (bad) birdwatching, playing my fiddle, and learning Dutch.
I have an LLB undergraduate degree in English Law and an LLM Master’s degree in Law in Development, both from the University of Warwick.
