Technical Officer

Global Office

My name is Rosanna van Hespen and I will start my role as a fulltime Technical Officer with Wetlands International on November 21st. I’m excited to take over the Mangrove Restoration Guidelines from Celine van Bijsterveldt, to which she has already introduced me. I live in Antwerpen and will mainly work remotely, but I am looking forward to coming to the office at times and meeting you all.

Previously I worked on my PhD at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) in Yerseke, for which I’ve submitted my thesis in September. During my PhD, I studied the resilience of mangrove forests for nature-based flood defence and spent seven months in China to carry out field campaigns and collaborate with local experts.

Prior to my PhD I’ve worked as a software consultant, as a volunteer tour guide for the Waddenvereniging (which aims to protect the Dutch tidal flats) and as a volunteer data scientist at 510 (the data team for humanitarian aid of the Dutch Red Cross). I hold a MSc in Quantitative and Applied Ecology from the University of Melbourne and a BSc in Biology from Utrecht University.
