“For the last century wetlands in Bulgaria have decreased significantly. Most are drained or turned into fishponds and dams. At the beginning of the 20th century, wetlands occupied about 2,000 km2 or 2% of the territory of our country and for the last century they have decreased 20 times. Most of the wetlands are drained for use as arable land, some have been turned into dams, and others are in fishponds. Others, though preserved, are significantly influenced by human activity and disrupted water regime. Wetlands International as a specialised institution dedicated to the conservation and restoration of wetlands is a key partner in achieving our Foundation’s goal to improving the welfare of wetlands in our country.”
