Changing the paradigm on mangrove restoration in Indonesia

Published on:

The Global Mangrove Alliance Indonesia chapter is adopting Community-based Ecological Mangrove Restoration as the way forward for successful mangrove restoration in Indonesia. In collaboration with Mangrove Action Project, the alliance is training people from civil society and governments from all levels that have been involved in the rehabilitation of mangroves in Indonesia, from Sumatra to Papua.

The purpose of the training is to change the paradigm from going straight to planting to first understanding the factors that are disrupting effective restoration, such as disturbed hydrology and ecology, before deciding whether to plant or not. It considers natural regeneration as the preferred approach as mangroves can effectively recover by themselves, with planting as the last resort.

Furthermore, the trainees discussed social and economic aspects of mangrove restoration conditions.
