We are delighted to announce the recent appointment of our new Supervisory Council Chair, Prof. André van der Zande. The Supervisory Council is in charge of the overall supervision of the course of affairs within Wetlands International and oversees the implementation of its policies and Strategy.

André is currently Director General of RIVM, the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, working to improve public health and create a clean and safe environment. He has more than 40 years of experience in three fields: science and education, policymaking and implementation, and management of a range of types of organisations. He has worked in international policy and diplomacy, as well as being active at the local level. André also serves on boards to promote healthy urban living and to stimulate innovations in land use of peatlands in the Netherlands.

André is very proud to take up the position of Chair for Wetlands International: “I have had a lifelong commitment to nature and an interesting career so I believe I can be of service to Wetlands International. From the start, Wetlands International has taken the approach of working for and with people in wetlands. I hope to help strengthen this approach and bring in innovative approaches so that wetlands can become part of the much needed sustainable solutions for this planet.”

Jane Madgwick, Wetlands International CEO, also highlighted André’s valuable experience, which will help to increase the impact of our work: “I’m delighted to announce the new Chair of Wetlands International. I am sure that André will be a great help in inspiring and guiding the Supervisory Council and Board of Association. He brings tremendous enthusiasm, expertise and experience that is highly relevant to our stakeholders and the mix of science, policy and practice that we employ in tackling the pressing global wetland challenges.  I look forward to working with André in the coming years and to drawing on his experience and ideas, as we continue to shape up the organisation and heighten our impact, alongside our many partners.”

Welcome and congratulations to André!
