Transforming collaborations and shifting finance flows for a global step change in mangrove restoration and protection.

The Mangrove Breakthrough is a global movement to reshape how mangroves are valued, financed,
and protected. It brings together governments, investors, civil society, and local communities to drive
system-wide change, —mobilizing $4 billion to secure the future of over 15 million hectares of
mangroves by 2030.

The Breakthrough was launched at COP27 and brought together governments, non-governmental
organizations (NGOs), researchers, and financers to mobilize collectively around four actions:

1. Reduce net mangrove losses driven by humans to 0
2. Ensure long-term protection for 80% of remaining mangroves
3. Restore mangroves to cover at least half of all recent loss
4. Drive sustainable finance to existing mangrove extent

Wetlands International is united with Conservation International, The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in the Global Mangrove Alliance. The Global Mangrove Alliance (GMA) is a key Mangrove Breakthrough partner that mobilizes and engages NGOs and scientific institutions to implement high-quality activities to restore, protect, and manage mangrove ecosystems on the ground. The GMA offers a unique value through 14 national chapters and 100+ member network that represents 45 mangrove countries.
