Wetlands, a hope for peace, stability, and sustainable development in the Sahel
From July 19 to 21, 2022 Wetlands International Sahel Office organized with the support of its partners at the Radisson Collection Hotel in Bamako, Mali a round table on wetlands in the Sahel with the theme: Wetlands, hope for peace, stability, and sustainable development in the Sahel.
This round table saw the participation of the Executive Secretary of the Niger Basin Authority, the Director of Water Resources of the Volta Basin Authority and the Acting Secretary General of the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River, three ministers from Mali (Environment, Water and Rural Development), the Secretary General of the Ministry in charge of water in Guinea, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden, the UNDP, the Embassy of CANADA, the Embassy of Belgium, the World Bank and several other structures.
The general objective of this round table is to place wetlands at the center of sustainable development in the Sahel to positively influence policies, major investments in development in order to reduce the risk of conflicts, the negative effects of climate change and build community resilience .
- Specific objectives
- Amplify general awareness of the importance of Sahelian wetlands for stability, security and sustainable development;
- Influencing political decision-makers for a better consideration of issues related to wetlands;
- Mobilize investments in favor of the safeguarding and restoration of Sahelian wetlands;
- Share Wetlands International flagship results in knowledge development and decision support tools and scaling up initiatives in the Sahel;
- Forge strategic partnerships for the safeguarding and restoration of wetlands as a vector of peace, stability and sustainable development.
This round table was sanctioned by a final declaration which contains 25 priority actions and 7 recommendations for the benefit of wetlands.
