As naturally complementary partners, Wetlands International and ONE Architecture & Urbanism have, since 2016, been working together to integrate wetlands in the urban landscape to build more resilient and livable cities.

In the events surrounding the UN Climate Action Summit, we jointly developed our own commitment to intensify collaboration, and begin taking steps to enable urban planners and other stakeholders.

The commitment?

  • To reduce urban flood and disaster risk, by working with stakeholders to include interconnected wetland ecosystems in urban design and planning.
  • To upscale, guide and replicate current projects across multiple cities, creating national programs.
  • To, as part of the Accelerating Adaptation through Building with Nature in Asia initiative, jointly set up and operationalize the urban component in the Year of Action of the Global Commission on Adaptation, launched on the 23rd September 2019 in New York.
  • Widely share experiences and educate stakeholders and the next generation of climate leaders.

The action?

In the upcoming Amsterdam International Water Week in November 2019, Wetlands International’s Sander Carpaij and Leulseged Yirgu will host interactive sessions to begin making good on this commitment. We will follow this up with roundtable discussions at the UN World Urban Forum in early 2020
