Building a Data-to-Action Pipeline for the World’s Mangroves
The Global Mangrove Alliance (GMA) and the Mangrove Breakthrough (MB) are building the digital infrastructure needed for a global “data-to-action” pipeline. Piece by piece, the information needed to advance the goals of both initiatives is coming into place, connecting data on mangrove extent, restoration, projects, and investment.
Four complementary platforms, Global Mangrove Watch, the Mangrove Restoration Tracker Tool, the Mangrove Projects Portfolio Dashboard, and the NbS Investment Platform, are helping to build the foundation for this emerging data architecture. Together, they are laying the groundwork for a global data-to-action pipeline that can show where action is needed, track progress, and help increase the number of mangrove-positive projects and investments needed to advance the goals of both the GMA and MB.

GMA Enables Science-Based Action
The Global Mangrove Alliance is a global initiative comprised of over 100 NGOs, academic institutions, and governments with shared goals to conserve and restore mangroves. The Alliance has developed science-based tools to help measure and track global goals to halt human-driven mangrove losses, restore half of recently lost mangroves, and double the protection of mangroves globally.
The Global Mangrove Watch (GMW)* is the premier provider of satellite-based mangrove data layers. Powered by high-resolution remote sensing, it provides annual mangrove extent and change data at the global scale along with a wealth of other layers essential to decision-making. GMW datasets provide foundational baselines for understanding where mangroves exist, how they are changing over time, where carbon stocks run deepest, where protections exist, and where restoration potential is greatest. The GMW serves as the core scientific underpinning of all programs run by the GMA and provides the evidence and science for overarching reporting for the MB. Learn more about the GMW.
The Mangrove Restoration Tracker Tool (MRTT) is a specialized scientific framework designed for deep-dive monitoring. It functions as a standardized logbook for practitioners to record site-level data related to management, governance, socio-economics, and biophysical indicators, which are important for understanding the successes and failures of mangrove restoration. The MRTT is hosted on and fully integrated within the GMW platform, providing a global view of mangrove restoration. Learn more about the MRTT.
Financing Mangrove-Positive Actions
The MB builds on the GMA’s robust data infrastructure to help catalyze mangrove-positive investment. To mobilize USD 4 billion for the protection and restoration of 15 million hectares of mangroves by 2030, the MB is focused on building the market architecture needed to address gaps across the investment ecosystem and enable systemic transformation.
The pipeline includes for-profit and non-profit conservation and restoration projects, as well as mangrove-positive businesses that help protect, restore, or sustainably manage mangroves. These businesses operate across sectors such as aquaculture and fisheries, agriculture, tourism, blue carbon, coastal infrastructure, waste and water management, and the bioeconomy.
Central to this has been building a robust pipeline of mangrove-positive projects — a key priority for unlocking investment at scale. The objective is to signal to corporates and investors that a market of investable projects is available and point to levers to accelerate its growth.
To advance this work, the MB has partnered with the GMA, Restor, and Capital for Climate (C4C).
The MB is working with its partners to create a single entry point for projects, making it easier for project developers to join the pipeline and access the right support. The goal is to simplify the process, avoid duplication across platforms, and provide a clearer path from project identification to investment readiness and financing.
The Mangrove Projects Portfolio Dashboard: The MB, GMA, and Restor launched the Mangrove Projects Portfolio Dashboard, a curated collection of projects and opportunities that are presented to potential funders and financial institutions. Built on the GMW dataset, the dashboard uses cutting-edge scientific data, making it easier for funders and investors to identify, assess, filter, and finance high-quality mangrove conservation and restoration projects.

The Portfolio Dashboard maps 300+ project sites across nearly 50 countries and more than 500,000 hectares, giving funders and investors a direct line of sight into an emerging asset class. Fund managers can filter deals by development stage, geography, and operating mode. The result is a transparent marketplace that gives donors and impact investors the data they need to deploy capital into coastal ecosystems with confidence.
The Mangrove Projects Portfolio empowers project developers to report their specific impact and creates a visible profile that connects users with each other for storytelling and funding opportunities.
The NbS Investment Platform: Commercially viable projects identified through the Mangrove Projects Portfolio are shared with C4C, which connects investment-ready projects with investors. C4C screens and strengthens projects before publishing them on its NbS Investment Platform, improving their readiness and visibility among institutional investors, including asset managers, banks, private credit funds, and private equity firms. Projects are then prioritized for investor engagement, roadshows, and investment showcases, connecting high-potential initiatives with sources of capital.
Alongside these digital platforms, the MB is working with local country partners to identify financing needs, assess their investment readiness, and connect them with technical assistance and potential investors. These country-level efforts help build a stronger pipeline of mangrove-positive investment opportunities.
A Functional Ecosystem
Each platform serves distinct user groups across mangrove conservation and restoration, tailored to their specific needs and roles. Together, they provide the digital infrastructure helping advance the shared ambitions of the MB and GMA.
Building on the strong foundation established by GMW and the MRTT, these platforms are increasingly connecting data and action. By combining global monitoring and restoration data with the project pipeline and investment infrastructure being developed through Restor and C4C, it is now easier to identify opportunities, direct capital toward mangrove-positive projects, and track progress from data through to impact backed by science.
